Marxalokk Bay is located in the southern part of the country and it is the second largest natural haven of the Maltese island. It got its name from Maltese “Marxa lokk” that means “southern port”.
It is widely used by the local fishermen, and numerous fishing boats called “luzzu” can be encountered here. Their look is very interesting – they are painted in different colors and have an eye drawn on their nose. The fishermen believe that it protects them from numerous dangers in the sea. Luzzu boats arise great interest among the tourists and are depicted on numerous postcards and photos.
You can visit the nearby village Marxalokk whose habitants make their living by fishing on the luzzu boats and sell their product. Every Sunday the fishing market works and there you can buy fresh fish at a low cost. Besides, in Marxalokk there are lots of cafes serving delicious seafood.
